TAT Mobile Application “The City Guide”


    With an aim to be World’s leading organization in tourism, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has modernized the organization to be updated to the fast-changing technology, especially on presenting tourism information. They have improved the channel to broadcast information to be more modern and convenient to fully service both Thai and foreign users.

TAT has developed ten mobile applications called “The City Guide” which are featured in the style of travel guide book. They are for ten main destinations – Bangkok, Pattaya, Hua Hin, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Chaing Rai, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Krabi and Phuket. There are also five more applications for five travel lifestyles – Spa, Art, Romance, Nature and Adventure. These 15 applications are available on iPhone, Android and Window Phone.

Highlights and interesting features of these 15 applications

    The application’s development team has summarized the trend of smartphone usage for tourism in 2015 that 94% of tourists use their smartphones to search for tourism activities, 75% for searching for restaurants and 80% for navigation. After analyzing those facts, they have developed the trend into the application’s main features – To Go - To Eat - To Sleep -To Play search systems where users can “Filter”, “Bookmark”, and “Share” onto social network. Linked with Google Map, the application allows users to “Get Direction” with three preferences – List view, Map view, and AR view (Location-Based). Moreover, to fully enjoy the new way of searching tourism information, the team has chosen the “Augmented Reality” technology, consisting of Marker-Based AR, Location-Based AR, and Snap photo AR, to create interesting activities for application users.  (Note: Window Phone does not support AR system)
